Is it just me or has the site been really slow compared to the past? I have been away a bit and it used to be way faster than this back then.

I've been seeing that too. I wasn't sure if it was just a network hiccup between me and the site, but if you're seeing it too, probably not.
I worry that this may mean that the database has simply grown too large again. Bad time for this with MoP looming on the horizon. |

Some other people have reported slowdowns too, in the bugs subforum, specifically of the front page and couple of others relating to uploads. Strangely, most pages of the site seem to function as before and I have read no reports of the uploads themselves being slowed in cases where no actual errors are reported. Cause of the slowdowns is so far unknown, at least to me.
Since the question has come up elsewhere, which browser(s) are you two using? Possible to test more than one? |

I use Firefox. For the sake of testing I fired up IE and got the same results.
To elaborate on what I've been seeing, the main page loads slowly, the submission page loads slowly, and I don't know that my data uploads slowly but the upload confirmation page loads slowly. Also, I have bookmarks for the guilds that I have characters in, and when I hit one of those bookmarks those pages load slowly as well. They load slowly enough that I never have just sat and timed it, I usually just alt-tab away until it finishes loading, but I would estimate a full minute for each of those pages to load. They never fail or give me errors, they just take their time.
It's not the end of the world, it won't even keep me from running censuses and uploading the data. It just leaves me wondering about the root cause and what it may portend for the future. |

I am glad you have decided to tough it out... but I truely hope Rollie could somehow find at least a little bit of time to look in here. I understand that real life always comes first, but his presence is sorely missed and not just by me. MoP is approaching and various odds and ends keep cropping up... |

I agree wholeheartedly I gave up poking him by email since he always replies, says he'll look into it soon, and then silence. I'll give it one last try when addons get enabled in MoP beta (heh, for all I know that may have already happened, got a bit distracted by Diablo 3 the past couple of weeks...) and so I can tell him exactly what works and what doesn't there. But I'm not too hopeful any more. _________________ EU-Draenor:

It saddens me to hear that even you are losing hope. I guess we have been driven to knife's edge and if MoP breaks things, it will spell the end of WCR. And sadly, even if the addon in itself doesn't break... unless both it and the site get some serious attention, we'll lose all data on Pandaren and monks of all races... and anything above level 85, too... *sad panda face* |

Yeah, I'm hoping he'll come back but it's not looking great. I know when I last spoke to him he was hoping to find someone to help with the site (frankly, take it over would be more like it), but it doesn't look like any of the regulars here have that level of database and programming knowledge. If anybody does and wants to help, please do contact him! _________________ EU-Draenor:

That's not a very promising picture you are painting there... Unfortunately I lack the necessary skills and knowledge. It's starting to sound like I am about to earn my final million breaches... 3 million new ones should break late(r) today, if there are no technical errors like yesterday and day before that on my end. 18 million updates are about a month, month and a half away... but after those? Looking at the activity of the top 10s... those might even turn into the final million breaches, period.
We have already lost so many users, too... I don't know if anyone else noticed... but after about 8 hours of June data processed... there were only SIX names in the monthly top 10s. The lists have, as far as I can remember, never been that short after that much time during my stay on the site. And the Most Wanted lists? US, EU English, French and German have 0ed out completely and even the Spanish lists show multiple 0s.
And unlike before... between technical worries and my personal gaming time, I can't really help much more than I currently do. When the current Darkmoon Faire ends, I can try to do a little bit more, but it will be pretty much a drop in a vast sea of 0s, it seems. |

Yeah things are struggling at present, I'm all distracted by Diablo 3 and real life stuff, and not actually censusing at present, really need to get back to that and see if I can help a little on that Most Wanted list, but been hard to get down to it. I'm suspecting D3 has taken a lot of WoW players temporarily, which may include a few censusers, so things will likely pick up again, particularly when MoP brings people back... IF we have a working addon and website in time. _________________ EU-Draenor:

IMO best solution would be if rollie sells the site to ZAM or Curse if they're interested at all. what do you think?

Even though the site does have some value, I am not sure whether someone would be interested in actually buying it... and there is of course the matter of us not owning our characters. I am not American and I am not a lawyer either, but Blizzard and / or users of the site might have a problem with him making money on data that is technically not his property and / or the contact data we have supplied.
Also, as far as I know, WCR is Rollie's personal hobby and there isn't any company behind it that he could sell as such.
Ideally, I would like to see many features of WCR and Censusplus as additional free services provided by Blizzard if Rollie decides he can't keep the site up, but I don't think that's going to happen. However, it's my sincere wish that someone will continue to take care of this great and very useful site. |

I used Warcraft Realms in the past and I participated in submitting data way back...I just came back to using the site and it's performance is really bad, to the point I can see how census data could be impacted (because who wants to submit data if every click on the site is painfully slow - it becomes too much of a hassle that you just say 'the heck with it')
Slightly off-topic : It bothers me that 3rd party developers even have to burden themselves with creating such a site as WarcraftRealms and the census plugin in the first place. Why doesn't blizzard provide this information as a service on their website in the first place?
You can't tell me they don't have the data on each realm - as they are charged with managing the servers by default they HAVE to know the population states on each server/realm to manage them properly. And since its their servers and their game and they programmed it all - the data they have is as accurate as it gets because they don't rely on people submitting it - they putt the data straight from the servers themselves.
Not to mention, and no offense to the devs of Warcraft Realms, blizzard could make a much better looking, more feature rich and faster performing census feature than any 3rd party dev could. Simply because they have full access to everything, they wrote the code for the game in the first place oh yeah and the fact since they rake in an estimated $1 *BILLION* per year on wow subs alone -- they have the funding for it too. |

Welcome back. Also glad you are willing to tough it out with us. As for submitting... the slowdowns are worse for those need browse the site extensively. :/
As to your question... As far as I can tell, the answer is as simple as it is (un)suprising: They don't want to.
Yes, they have the best current data. However, as far as history goes... To my knowledge, WCR is biggest repository of WoW characters past, deleted, renamed or transferred... In other words, WCR retains data Blizzard no longer has.
As for Blizzard and money... I hope it has occured to you that they have spared millions by letting people develop addons for AHs, questing, crafting, inventory control, UI improvements and many other things at 0 cost for themselves? |

I wouldn't think it would be too bad to get monks in there and allow for level 90 toons. It sounds more like adding a few database fields and then a bit of copy/paste/modify to the site programming to me, but I'm not sure what he's using on the backend. I have a fair bit of experience with php/mysql and a little bit with WoW addons, mostly to tweak things that bug me.
I wonder how many people are generally helping with census data at any given time? I guess maybe most people drift in and out, helping for a bit to update their realm and then disappearing for a while.
I had some troubles loading the site the other day, but I don't know what kind of hardware and connection he's using here either.
Also, I agree that it would be nice if Blizzard gave this data, but then people would constantly be looking to see when WoW was "dying" and they probably don't want that :p |

I'd imagine a fair number of people are like me, they are uploading regularly when they are actively playing, probably around each major raid release and then drift off. I know my server is now reporting that it hasn't received updates in a while (looks like June).
I suspect that if there is a working client by MoP we'll see a huge rush, as of right now, when I try to run the census mod in the beta it crashes the game.
And to just state what we already know, the site still runs fairly slow. I've used IE, Chrome and Firefox. Hate to see the site go, cause I like statiscal stuff. |

I've notice the site going slow especially when you're logged out and are bringing up the main page. I made Rollie aware of the issue. _________________

Hello everyone,
I just registered and began submitting data today and came here 'hoping' the site speed was just a noob (me) setting but apparently thats not the case . I as well will try and endure as long as I can because I think this is a wonderful program. It confirmed my suspicions about my favorite realms slowly dying. I currently have toons on a few of the realms with lacking or non existant data (haven't found this most wanted list I've seen mention of and am not excited about sitting here for hours (hopefully an exaggeration) looking for it. I will try to keep an eye on the forums for any news and perhaps see if I can get a few more realms a little more current. Thanks! |

The most wanted list is here: http://www.warcraftrealms.com/mostwanted.php - it's in the dropdown menu under Realms Always good to see new people around!
Can't make any suggestions about the site speed though, since I have no trouble at all, which is strange - there's just nothing wrong for me, it's exactly the same as it's always been. Makes me wonder if it could be advert related though, since I'm on a premium account with no ads. I shouldn't really be suggesting adblocking here, since the ads pay for the server, but perhaps worth people with problems trying it just to rule out the ads?
Edit: in fact I tested it myself by logging out and disabling my adblock - omg that is slow! I'll get onto Rollie I think, something's screwed with his ad provider... _________________ EU-Draenor:
